Y's Men International - South West India Region
Founded in Toledo, Ohio, USA in 1922 to support a local YMCA, Y's Men International is now oriented to serving the worldwide YMCA, the largest non-governmental youth organisation, and through it the communities in which it is present throughout the world. Since the YMCA is usually known as "the Y" in the USA, and as the Y's Men movement started there as a club of "men of and for the Y", it was named the "Y's Men's Club".
The Founder of the club , Judge Paul William Alexander gave the motto of the movement : 'To acknowledge the duty that accompanies every right'. Y's Men International is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
The first Y's Men's Club in India-Ceylon Region was started in 1931 at Colombo. The first Y's Men's club in Kerala was started Ernakulam in 1950. YMC of Trivandrum was chartered in 1956. South West India Region was formed in 1980.
Y's Men International is built on the three pillars of 'cosmopolitan outlook' , 'community service' and 'comradeship'.
South West India Region , has decades of active years of social service and fellowship and is marching ahead full throttle under the energetic and enthusiastic leadership of Ym.Dr.A.K.Shrihari (RD) and his Regional Team.
The Region now has scores of clubs scattered in India and the Arabian Gulf countries with a growing membership. The Region intends to undertake millions of rupees worth community projects during 2015-16. The Regional theme is ' Healing hand for the depressed'. This would include the marginalized and different categories of disadvantaged groups in each local community. The major Regional Project in 2016-17 is 'Kidney health for all'. The Region intends to provide free dialysis to thousands of kidney patients. 'Road safety' will be one of the key minor projects being undertaken by the clubs.
Ym.Dr.AK.Shrihari (RD) has declared that he will remain fully committed to the Regional Constitution and core principles of the movement. Socially committed citizens who would like to join this worldwide fellowship are most welcome.
